Honestly, if I ever kept guppies, I would probably keep something in with them to keep babies in check. Or just keep males, though this presents it's own challenges.

I have a Fluval 406 on my big tank, and it works very well. The primer doesn't work the best at times, but otherwise I love the filter. I also have an Eheim on my 17 gallon tank, but it's only been running a couple weeks...so far it's flawless though ;D

If you can, I would dial back your lighting for awhile to give the plants plenty of time to establish, plus if you have pretty bright lighting without co2, you can definitely get algae that way.
