Well tomorrow I'll re do the sand to see if that helps as a temp solution and will try a 20% water change once a week maybe more if needed until I can raise enough money to get a bigger tank with a more powerful filter. Thank you both for your help in the matter.

it's a 14 x 10 x 7 (LxHxW) and my volume math skills were never very good :P

The filter is made by fluval and pumps 200 liters an hour don't know if that helps and I'll try a 15% water change tomorrow as it will be easy for me to keep as a sunday routine.
