i was told that the ones in the shop live for 1-2 years and grow to 1-2 inches. these are freshwater ones.

I am looking to set up a 5 gallon for some ghost shrimp, about 5. The tank is currently cycling, and i dont know what type of substarate to add. Should i add sand or gravel? And also what would be the best colour for the shrimp to be seen?
