There's no way you can house a betta in a 3L, get the "biggest" tank you are willing to get. I would recommend at least an 18L (5 gallon) tank.   Also, do you mean gender preference for a tank that size? If so, it's the same either way, male or female. 

I took that one back, this is a new one. Can constipation cause him/her to lose color, clamp fins, and lay at the bottom on the tank?

I think I'm going to see if I can return him, I'm rather weary about treating illness. I've been trying to get a pic since I came home, but I can't get one focused enough to see anything.

I'm kind of attached to him because I think he's going to be a pretty adult. How would I be able to tell if he/she has ich after a couple days?

Yup, I agree. I don't want to deal with the stress of trying to treat him/her, which is hopefully understandable.

I have read those articles. "If ammonia and nitrite both read 0 ppm, you are cycled. Do a large water change, be sure the water is the proper temperature, and add fish. The odds are this will not be the case quite this soon."

What if I add my betta and do frequent water changes?
