I will try to get a water sample form my LFS and look into the possibility of both these diseases. I thought that with Columnaris and Dwarf Gourami Disease the fish usually died quite quickly after showing symptoms. My fish has had this 'lump' for about a week now. Thanks so much for your help.

I have no experience building or repairing tanks but I am a fan of buying them second hand and cleaning them up. When ever I set up a tank for the first time I fill it with water and leave it in my bathtub overnight to make sure it isn't going to leak! Good luck with your project 

Thanks for the advise everyone. I have a BN pleco and some snails in my tank, are both ok with sand substrate?   Also can I use an air stone with sand or sill it make the inside of my tank look like a sandstorm?
