What are the best retail pet stores in New Jersey/USA for the aquarist?

What type of gravel is best for a freshwater community tank? Is sand a bad choice? If so, why? How much gravel should be used? After doing some research I discovered that the ratio for gravel is 1.5 pounds of gravel for each gallon of tank size (so 15 lbs. for a 10 gallon tank). Hope this hepls...
