I haven't put my heaters horizontally. You can't hide them as easy. Thermometer on the other side of the tank show all is well. My external is the best thing I have purchased.

I am 100% sure that plants are good for a fishtank. They can reduce ammonia AND Nitrates. Haven't seen anything about Nitrites.
