I always liked Harlequin Rasboras myself... Matter of fact I think I should get some for my tank. They are definitely different than what you normally see (neons, guppies, etc). They stay fairly small (up to 2"), and are cool looking fish on top of it. A lot hardier than neons too.

You do have connections to other tanks... The same ones you are going to buy the fish from... If you ask your lfs they will probably give you some gravel out of one of their tanks which will do fine as a bacterial medium. They are usually willing to do it because they know you'll be back to buy...
