    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

August 2 Only 2 babies survived the first batch and none the second. The third batch went extinct after only a few days. I don't really mind, I don't want to have a ton of babies to deal with. I did notice the two survivors ate lots of babies from batch 3 and I suspect my striped Raphael as a...

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

March 26   The babies are growing really fast. I no longer have to crush flakes for them. I just take a pinch, dip it in the water so it sinks. The parents are messy eaters and small pieces always make it down for the babies. They are much more dependant on flakes and get very little of their...

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

March 20   Babies are getting more active by the day. Most don't need to rest on the bottom at all any more. Parents are frantically trying to keep them all in check.

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

March 19   The parents moved some plants (they weren't anchored anyways so I really don't care) to make a nest for the babies during the day. Babies are a lot more active now.

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

March 18   Babies!!! They aren't wrigglers either...they look to be at least 5 days old. Maybe even my first estimate as to when they laid their eggs was correct. This is the first time that the parents have led the babies out of the cave, which is why it took so long to discover them. I crushed...

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

March 17   The past few days the pair went out of breeding colours, and now back into them. They have also dug a large pit in the back of their cave

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

March 14     Their behavior has really changed. The female has also somewhat lost her red spot: it is now pink. This morning I saw them doing what looked like what they are supposed to do when they have fry. Apparently they will pich up fry that stray and deposit them back with the rest. That is...

What Do You Feed Your Central American Cichlids?

My oscar once ate the peas meant for my pleco. He somehow managed to get them all in his mouth, but I thought he would choke to death. I have never had a problem feeding a cichlid

    What To Breed?

To solve the debate, I went and measured it. Smart guy here.   24" long by 12.5-13" wide, and 16" deep. So roughly 20 gallons.       I'm liking the idea of cherry shrimp at this point. Can I use a 5 gallon tall if I stick a large piece of vertical diftwood to maximize the area they can use? It...

What Do You Feed Your Central American Cichlids?

Feed them edible stuff. I really don't think most cichlids are picky. They definitely love the live and frozen stuff though. Try finding them some mosquito larvae.

    Journal: Breeding Black Convict Cichlids

I'll try to get some. Not that much to see yet though. Except for when the bloodworms are in, and when they see their reflections in the glass. Other than that, the female just fiddles around with stuff in the cave, often out of sight, and the male usually pokes his head out every minute or so...
