Hi There,
Any advise on cycling a betta tank?
Im a bit nervous about putting household ammonia (only amm + water 9.0% w/w) in and doing a fishless cycle. At the same time i dont want to plonk the betta in and doing water changes daily just hoping for the best.
The readings are low when i...
Bought the boots ammonia but i have done some more test readings and ammonia now @ 0.25ppm. wahoo! Nitrite/Nitrate still @ 0ppm but im started a least. May hold off with the ammonia and see how i get on with the natural cycle first.
Thanks for advice so far. If there is any other input or...
Im UK based so i will nip to boots tonight! Going to change the filter aswell as its to noisy. Have a Hagen mini elite and going to change to a stingray 5 so its probably good the filter hasnt started the cycle. I use the stingray 10 in my other aquarium and its much quieter.
Waterdrop - thanks...
Ok, sounds good. I might leave the current filter as it is then. Where can i get pure ammonia from though. I know almost all household products/chemicals are extremely unsuitable. Is my lfs likely to have it?
Obviously im really aiming for a fishless cycle as the only fish in the tank will be...
Hi Waterdrop,
Thanks for your response.
I have had this tank running now for just under 3 months. It is fully stocked and i am having constant 0ppm ammonia readings (i use the seachem constant alert product back up by weekly/bi-weekly API master test kit)
I suppose in the long scheme of...
Ok. have my 15l betta tank all set-up. Soaked the filter sponge in my currently cycled tank for a day or so (probably didnt do anything but thought would give it a go). Also added a plastic moss ball ornament from my cycled tank. Heater @ 26.5C Filter: Hagen mini elite (<20l)
Sprinkled a few...
Im not much help as a bit of a newbie but i do know the answer to your guppy question - yes the males will be fine. I kept 3 males and they were fine together, then added a male lyretail guppy and that was fine too. They love swimming around together.
Good Luck,
Ben
The only thing i am worried about is overcrowding, would a group of corys not overstock my tank? Or do they have a lower bioload?
Thanks for your advice.
Hi there,
I have two small peices of bogwood im preparing for my betta tank. Its currently soaking in a bucket but do i need to treat the water in that bucket with a tap water dechlorinator so it doesnt soak up the chlorines in the water or does this not matter?
How long is it a advised to...
Just a minor amount of algae - nothing big. A few orangey coloured bits on the front of tank (about 1cm areas x 2/3). Rubs off quickly with a scrubber. Just thought algea eaters might be something to add without having toom uch of an impact on filter - or at least thats what im trying to...
See images below. Its taken 2 1/2 months slowly but now is fully stocked. Although i am tempted to put an algae eater of some sorts in there? Do they affect the bioload much - dont want to ruin the tank. Any suggestions appreciated.

2 x Honey Gourami (Pair) - Honey(F) & Marmalade(M)

Ok, so i have started setting up my new male betta tank (picture to follow later today). I already have a 35L community tank with 2 Honey Gourami, 3 Blue Male Guppies & 1 silvery blue male lyretail guppy.
So far i have:
Aqua One Cube (15L - 25x25x25cm)
Hagen Mini elite filter (up to 20l)

Just bought a new tank - Aqua one Cube 25 (25x25x25c - 16L) This will be just for my long awaited betta & maybe a few shrimp.
Just wanted opinion on the best substrate type (if there is one)? Is there anything Bettas do/dont like in particular.
Thanks
Ben
