Dunkal, wouldn't most chiclhids grow to about 8-12 inches each? with a 20 gallon tank, I would think he/she would only be able to handle 3 or 4 max.

In addition to the above statements, it sounds like the tank is not cycled. Initially, you need to purchase goldfish to raise the ammonia and nitrate. after 4-7 weeks, both should drop down to nearly zero and the tank is healthy for exotic fish. - Eric
