    Importance Of Gh/kh?

Thanks a lot everyone. Since we do have a real plants, I'll make sure to check for GH and KH. Just to make sure, I'm supposed to use these measurements to figure out the CO2 content within the tank, right?

I was just wondering. Our pH level is a steady 7.5.

    Importance Of Gh/kh?

As newbies to the wonderful and rewarding world of fishkeeping, we are consistently reminded to check for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. After more research on this hobby, we've learned that there are other things to look for such as general and carbonate hardness. So my questions are: what is...

Thanks Oldman, That's exactly the kind of information that we were looking for. We are still keeping up with our daily water changes. Now we have an idea of when the aquarium is cycled. Thanks again.

Hey pirate, That makes perfect sense. I guess what I'm asking is; once a tank is fully cycled, how long will it take for ammonia to break down into nitrite? Will we even notice that ammonia is present in the tank?

Thanks Mikaila and Jodee. I was wondering if anyone had any information or know where we can find out how long ammonia is present in a tank before breaking down to nitrites. We do tests every 6 hours and log the results. We noticed that ammonia is at its highest (.25 ppm) around 6 am and 6 pm...

Thanks for the support! Yes we have learned A LOT!!! I have a question though.... if we already acclimated our fish with the aquarium salt would it harm the fish if we just stopped using it?

Ok... sorry I am still learning how all of this works... So what can you tell me about what is happening with the cycle by this.... Last night at 9pm we tested for ammonia and Nitrites. Ammonia was .25 and nitrites 0. We did a 20% water change and tested again a couple hours later and the...

So what do you get out of this... at about 6am this morning our ammonia level was at .50, we did a water change. Around 12pm we tested ammonia again and it was 0 but Nitrites read .3. We checked again at 6pm both ammonia and nitrites read 0. It is 9pm and we tested again and ammonia was back...

Thank you for all of your help. I think what we will do is check the Ammonia/Nitrite levels morning and night... then if there is anything "fishy" we will do a water change. we have been doing 20% changes as needed so far. Another couple questions... if we keep doing this... and all goes...

Thank you for the welcome  We we told that with our new tank we should set it up with the filter (we have Aqua Clear 3000 for 50 gal tank but we actually have a 30 gal), condition the water to treat for chlorine, add the gravel, decorations, live plants, and set the heater so the water...

On another note about our guorami's research tells us that they are top-mid level dwellers... however we find that they like to hide under the plants/log. Is this normal? Thank you, Drew&Dora

Thank you for your reply. We called PetSmart (where we got both fish) and they said that the guorami's should be fine because they use the salt in their water. We followed the instructions on the label... and the fish appear to be happy and active... our two male guorami's were actually...
