Nope. The barbs are not near the bubbler or try to stay near it. I do not notice any bubbles forming on the outside of any plants or fish that would suggest over-aeration.

I have noticed some white growth on the sides of my tank. They are not moving and look like dots everywhere. Is this just algae growth and is it detrimental to my fish? I've noticed growth on my heater as well

Use sand. I find it it easier to maintain than gravel due to the fact that you can visibly see the poo and uneaten food on the top and wont find its way underneath (as with gravel). Just make sure that you rinse the sand before you introduce it to your aquarium.
