How Do You Dispose Of Dead Fish?

Compost pile, and as Griz said all my old water goes to plants in the house and yard

    Python won't work

Well, first of all I should make the disclaimer that I don't use my Python to syphon the water out. I drain it into a bucket (with a regular aquarium syphon) and just use the Python to fill the tank. I find it easier that way for one person to use it. But when I have used the syphon on my...

What is the stupid thing you have ...

OK, the one I have done a couple of times is... come in from outside look at my fish tank, think to myself "Man that looks dark, I can't believe I did not turn on the light.." Turn off the light, take off my sunglasses, and think to myself, what an idiot B) THe other one I have done once to...

    Want to use real plants

This may sound callous, but there is only one way to find out. People regularly rearrange their tanks, so I don't think it would be too big of a deal for them. Good luck and enjoy

    fish for clean driftwood

If you do not have any plants I know (some) plecos eat wood. If you have any plants the plecos might eat them so I would not go with them. They would not eat enough that you would notice it I believe, but I imagine they would help keep it clean. Good luck.

    trouble with sand

Black sand- The substrate for planted tanks? I put mine under some regular sand. I thought it was for under whatever substrate you were going to use.

    Blue-green algae (I think)

I am beseiged by some algae or bacteria that I thought was blue-green algae at first. Now I think it is something else. I can't remember the name of it, but it is not an algae. I think it is caused, well helped, by having too much iron on the water. Does it come off in sheets? If it is on...

One of my local ones talked me out of a more expensive light and told me a cheaper model would probably be better.

Please, when a fish is flushed kill it first

"wouldn't it be better not to flush dead fish down the toilet? that can release nasties into our water systems" Yes, but people have this weird facination with flushing fishies and I figured I may as well make it better rather than stopping it all together  But yes, garbage, compost...

Please, when a fish is flushed kill it first

I just read about flushing some live critters down the toilet. I did not want to get involved with the morality of what was done, or seem like I have a problem with that person in particular. I just want to emphasize that one should make sure any animal they flush is dead first. If your too...

    Water changes with buckets...

First off, I am not that impressed with my python. Wasn't that much more work to use buckets and my plants were happier getting fish water. One other thing I have heard about hot water heaters is sometimes they fill up with sediment and rust. If you clean out your water heater every once in a...

Random thought, I would not recommend...

"No risk of scratches on the class this way" Well, I have no class, so I don't have to worry about scracthing it! :D Good idea btw, I'll remember that when my cleaner gets too much sand stuck in it.

Random thought, I would not recommend...

I have one of those magnetic cleaners for the sides of my tank. The one I have in my 55 does not float. At least once per cleaning that *#$@er drops into the sand and when I get it stuck back to the side there is at least one grain of sand in it. I always am glad I am using it on a glass tank...
