Ya from what I've read there are a fair amount of New World Cichlids that would be suitable for a 42 gal tank, but when it comes to africans it really needs to be 55gal+

I thought the red on the edge of the dorsal fin was suppose to go all the way to the end and be much pointy'er for a male. Also though egg spots on the dorsal fin indicated a female. To me both look like females... but what do I know?

Ya I don't think a 3ft tank would be suitable for grown jewels. And jewels/convits are old/new world but as jay and others have said they have had no problems.

Jewels will definitely need a bigger tank once they are mature and can be quite aggressive. Plus they are old world and convicts are new although I've read of people putting jewels in new world conditions without problems.
