    Mailing cycled filter media?

OK, any ideas how I can pull this off? Hoping to mail some of my cycled (2 year) filter media to my sister to jumpstart their new tank. Let's say for planning purposes 3-4 day trip in the mail but I suppose o could pay to overnight it. Will ship it in tank water. Bags? Some sort of plastic...

    Friends for long-finned skirt tetras

Thanks all for the replies. Do water changes every week, nitrates are a bit high for sure and I may try some pothos or something like that which is easy to grow and may help a bit with the nitrates. Honestly, the hillstream loaches were a bit of an experiment because I thought they looked so...

    Friends for long-finned skirt tetras

Thanks. I'd be open to maybe 1-2 more but not interested in adding 5 more. No apparent aggressive behavior amongst them and they never bothered with the platies and swordtail. I'm not even sure they know the loaches or peacock gudgeon exist.

    Friends for long-finned skirt tetras

Looking to replace some fish (platies and a swordtail) we have lost recently and need to find something that would work well with our 5 long-finned skirt tetras and maybe most importantly is considered a hardy fish. 20g, fully cycled, 0/0 ammonia and nitrite, highish nitrate (30-40), sand...

Switched to sand - what to add?

Recently switched from gravel to sand, wish I had done it sooner. Trying to think through what would be the best and final add to our tank stocking: 2-3 peacock gudgeon, small school of cories, or small school of kuhli loaches. I understand by the book some of my parameters might not be what...

    Boys will be Boys

Old thread but I'm just reading it. This is great. Exactly what is going on with my 3 male platies. Two red mickey mouse came from the same tank and were in mine for a month or so more than the new orange mickey mouse we added. There is 100% an alpha that does whatever he wants. The other...

    Glofish Yes / No

I've read that they do. There are two types of Glofish tetras: regular and longfin. I assume they also recognize/school with each other.

    Glofish Yes / No

LOL - reverse situation here. Got the kids a tank as a reward for a crappy summer and I am now the one most interested. They want glofish as the final stocking so going to get a school.

    Glofish Yes / No

Well-timed thread as we are likely getting our school of glofish this weekend or next week to finalize our 20g stocking. Still undecided between the danio and tetra. Also considering ordering direct from glofish.com. The price is fairly comparable to buying in the store and assuming the store...

    Glofish tetras and longfin tetras?

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the longfin variety was some type of different species. Good to know.

    Got it thanks

    Glofish tetras and longfin tetras?

There are two types of glofish tetras: regular and longfin. Since you have to get a school of these fish (6-7), would both types of tetras mix in the same school?

A bit of nitrite, should I do anything different?

Right, thanks. Will test daily and continue with water changes 1-2 times a week unless nitrites spike higher than .25-.5. I also have to be disciplined more about feeding them once a day. I haven't fed them today and all five seem to be lining up at the front of the tank giving me the stinkeye.

A bit of nitrite, should I do anything different?

50% water change didn't bring down the nitrite. Still .25ish. Ammonia is zero. Nitrates are zero (5ppm in tap). So my takeaway is hopefully the bacteria that eats nitrite will grow soon and then I should expect to see nitrates go up. All pics: left tubes are tank, right tubes are tap
