I would be carefull I once had a piece of wood from outside, I soaked it in water and when I was home changed it often with new boiling water. Ended up with some strange mold on the wood when I put it in my tank. Took it out after a few days.

I had a spotted perch for many years was one of my favorite fish. Very interesting to watch. I had it paired with Congo tetras and emperor tetras a gold gourami and a bristle nose pleco all got along fine. They are slow eaters so make sure yours is getting its fill. Not sure about the loach...

I think the most important thing is to fall flat on your face. Then to regroup figure out what went wrong and try again. I am on my second planted tank, its been going for almost a year and a half and it starting to look like what I want. Just when I think ive got it i learn more or something...
