I just answered my own question. Sorry, the sponge I was looking at was a cellulose sponge. I guess these sponges will rot.

I’m planning on building a sponge filter but the only type of sponge I can find in my area is a regular open celled sponge from Wal-Mart, which is intended to be used for cleaning cars. Is this type of sponge safe to use?
