    The film on the water surface is protein and oils from the fish. You can point a powerhead at the water surface to break it up, or get a filter equipped with a surface skimmer. I can't help you with your filter though. HTH. Blake

    You could add a sump to the aquarium and install a float valve/auto top-off unit. Or, is that what your talking about doing? I personally wouldn't trust an RO unit to flow freely into an aquarium; their output can fluctuate significantly depending on the temperature and pressure of the water...

    Broken Brace Bar

    I've seen people cut away the broken brace and then use a piece of acrylic of similar size, and then attached with nylon screws and wingnuts. You could probably use acrylic with a thickness of 1/8th of an inch.
