if you have mature media, but no fish, the bacteria will die off untill there is a source of ammonia. so you might want to think about doing something with that media they gave u untill you get fish.... i dont think 5 shrimp will be enough to keep it going.....

I would have thought that by removing a filter you will be removing a percentage of the bacteria which will then have to regrow on the remaining filter? If so, be careful that you do not cause a mini cycle.
