    Black Beard Algae (again)

Thank you for that detailed response, are you saying that you think your outbreak was triggered by a decrease in light levels, or was it a change in the colour spectrum? I will certainly step up water changes and substrate cleaning, and will test for phosphates. I have tried frogbit, but it...

    Black Beard Algae (again)

Thanks, the light is bright, but not dimmable unfortunately (it's an off the shelf all-in-one tank), and I've had no luck with floating plants. I agree, I wouldn't like to dose a whole tank with HP, dipping would be a possibility, but it's also growing on the filter unit, so that would have to...

    Black Beard Algae (again)

Hi, I have a tank which has a black beard algae problem. I can physically remove the clumps when they get big enough, but it seems to be thriving. It's a Ciano Aqua 60 (58 litres), Nitrates are < 10mg/l and nitrites zero. Substrate is blank sand. The tank population is one adult...

    Food for Anomalochromis sp.

Thank you all, that made for some interesting reading, and I will look into Gwand's food suggestions. In answer to your questions, the tank is 84 litres (22 US gallons), and is reasonably heavily (if not artistically) planted, at least to the point where I often struggle to find two 9cm fish...

    Food for Anomalochromis sp.

Hi, I'm struggling to find a suitable food form for my butterfly cichlids. They are adults, and a few years old, so I'm keeping them alive, but they are so difficult to feed that I'm also massively overfeeding and thus risk polluting the tank with uneaten food. The problem is that they are...

    Anomalochromis thomasi 28 days old

These are the last four of my brood from the end of last year, 25 went to the LFS and these are off to a new home tomorrow.

Giraffe cichlid getting bullied to death

It's horrible to see, I had those a few years ago (they were Haplochromis venustus then, but I think they've been reclassified) and they did sometimes get battered, especially against the rocks in the tank. Is it possible to divide the tank temporarily just to give it time to recover?

What do you do when it's time for the fry to leave home?

Exactly my position, I just needed to find a home for them, and would have given them to the store without blinking, but as someone on here suggested it, I asked, and they went for it. The money is going back to them in the long run, so everyone's happy.

What do you do when it's time for the fry to leave home?

A pound is about a dollar 25, I was sorry to see them go, and at that age/size (12 weeks or so) they were like little jewels, but I guess there will be another brood along in a minute - good luck with yours!

What do you do when it's time for the fry to leave home?

In case anyone's interested, the youngsters went to the LFS shop yesterday, one UK pound per fish as a store credit, which was a nice bonus. I'll go in next week and see what they're asking for them!

What do you do when it's time for the fry to leave home?

Thanks, and good grief, of course, you're absolutely correct, butterfly cichlid it is - I don't know where I got rainbow from. Initially I fed them on Ocean Nutrition "instant baby brine shrimp", which isn't anything of the sort, then Hikari first bites, and very quickly onto copeopods...

What do you do when it's time for the fry to leave home?

Thanks both, it hadn't actually occurred to me to ask for money for them, but maybe I'll give it a try. Here they are at ten weeks.
