What filter do you have? Maybe you could try letting the tank run for a little bit without adding any products so the ammonia can convert into nitrite, then nitrate.

What's the stocking for your tank and what size? If it is at least 20 gallons you could get a school of otocinclus. I also looked at some reviews for both products and both seemed to work for people. I would get the Seachem PhosGuard, though.
