Unfortunately 'cycle' contains dead bacteria, so although it contains the bacteria you need, it is almost useless as the bacteria you are adding are already dead, and no chance of reincarnation.... you still need to go through the cycling process. if you want to cycle with fish, waiting 2 days...

was he skinny before he stopped eating, or has he only got skinny since refusing to eat? if he was skinny before, it may be that he has internal parasites which were taking all the food from him which is why he got skinny even though he was eating. After a while I guess not getting enough...

As The Woolf said, you need to have a source of ammonia in the water to make the cycle actually happen either from ammonia, rotting fish food, or fish poo. An empty tank left to stand will never cycle. :)

If it was my tank I would disconnect the undergravel filter and leave the other 2 running. Undergravel filters tend to just suck all the crap into the gravel rather than up into the filter sponges where you want it. They do little for biological filtration in the tank, make the gravel harder...

When you say you changed the sponge in the filter, did you remove the whole sponge and put in a brand new one?

I just had a look at the ad, he now recomends a 5foot tank and says that although he keeps it with other fish, occasionally one disappears :blink: guess thats a fair warning...
