seems like the fish that live the longest, were mistakes you bought, or a fish that keeps you from going a different direction with your tank...

I started my 40 gallon tank 30 years ago, and nearly gave up when I started losing control of the algae. My local aquatic centre suggested I get a common plec, but didn't tell me how large they got. So I took their advice, and it kept me in the hobby because the algae just disappeared. That...

do your fish tell you it's feeding time???

I have a community tank with 32 varied fish. I only feed them once on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is plenty frequent enough as it helps keep the tank clean, and does the fish no harm as most are betweeen 10 and 15 years of age. My old common plec lasted for 29 years. Having said...

New Tank Opinion/ Rec & Question

Hi Fishkeeper. I only have the one tank, and do not have any plans for getting a new one. i have had these 4 clown loaches since they were small 15 years ago. Two of them are probably about 7 inches in length, and the other two about 5 inches. They seem happy and contented, and I assume they...

New Tank Opinion/ Rec & Question

I am going now to confuse most things that have been said previously. Firstly I have a Juwel Vision 180 litre tank which I think is fantastic. So easy to keep it and the filter media clean. The filter, pump and heater are all kept together in the one box at the right hand side at the back...

How do people do water changes?

I dechlorinate the whole tank with prime, and then add the new water with a large watering can putting the water directly in to the top of the Jewel filter. That way it does not mess up the gravel on the bottom.

    Holiday fish food

Please do not worry about feeding at all for 3/4 days. Even when I am home they only get fed 3 times a week. You do not need to feed them 2/3 times a day, as you will only provide excess food waste which tarnishes the water quality. When I am away on holiday for 2 weeks I get my daughter to...

    Clown Loach skin problems

He has now almost completely recovered with no intervention from myself. He will be okay for another 2/3 months, and then the whole cycle will repeat itself. The other clown loaches and other fish are always fine. Even looking as bad as he did, it did not seem to worry him, and if you ignore...

    Clown Loach skin problems

Hi Colin_T. Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I am unable to move out the Yoyo loach, but could try moving out the bridge, although I do not see him trying to get under it. With regards to the nitrates, doing bigger water changes will not help, as the water supplied by my water company has...

    Clown Loach skin problems

In a sense this is not an emergency as I have been having this same problem with this particular clown loach for probably the last 5/6 years. The problem loach is one of four clown loaches who were purchased together and are now probably about 14 years old. As you can see from the photo its...

    Best fish for beginners?

When I started fishkeeping 30 years ago the local aquatic centre sold me a common pleco to combat algae. It was absolutely brilliant keeping my 40 gallon tank clean, and at that time I had no idea how big they grew. As it got bigger I could not bear the thought of getting rid of it, and I was...

Is 26 degrees Celsius too hot for these tropical fish?

These fish are fine up to 28C. I keep Boesemani Rainbowfish at 27C and they are about 10 years old. Tank size is also fine.

    Longest tropical fish lifespan

Many of my fish are between 10-15 years of age including clown loach, boesmani Rainbowfish, yoyo loach and albino corys. I had a common plec that lasted 28 years. As previously said the secret is regular weekly water changes and feeding sparingly.

Got a haze in the water in one of my tanks, that I don’t fully understand…

Another item to check and clean is the pump itself. Take it apart and clean everything including the impeller. If I have not cleaned the pump for a while it makes the water cloudy when I switch it back on after a water change.

    Old Pleco

Treating all fish right, extends their lifespan sometimes by many years. I do a 35% water change every 7 days, and only feed my fish once on 3 days a week. At water change I suction the fish poop off the surface of the gravel. Most of my fish are 5 to 10 years of age. My clown loaches are 14...
