The maker is aqueon, what if I got just a pad made of filter floss and put it in there?

I only have one aquarium so should I just buy a sponge filter and use that in the place of the carbon containing pad while I'm treating?

Also I've raised the water temperature a bit more, it is at about 84 degrees now and i can see about 3/4 inch of air below the plastic lining/thing at the top of the aquarium that the hood rests on to increase the amount of oxygen in the water.

I did 2 50% changes yesterday and a 75% change today. I plan to keep those up on a daily basis until the ammonia and nitrite levels subside and stay that way. And I have definitely been dechlorinating the water and turning off the filter and heater during changes. Thanks guys!

Ran the test tonight. Ammonia - roughly .25 ppm pH - roughly 7.6 Nitrite - roughly 2.0 ppm Nitrate - roughly 20 ppm Any suggestions, you know, besides daily water changes? Thanks again to everybody for all your help!
