Hey y'all, I have this regular shortfinned Zebra Danio and for 1st, I thought it was obviously a female because of the obvious large abdomens? Anyways, it started off like the other zebras I had. Then, it started to go down to the bottom of the tank contantly like it was already ready for some egg-laying which I kind of don't belive since it was just a few days to this new 55gal tank. anyways, I was thinking "hmm.. maybe she's getting to kno good nesting spots..". A male was following and a little more like chasing it too (which I thought was odd because all of them did chasing and actually torn up some guppy fans and they wer suppose to be peaceful and good with commu tanks. not agressive) which kinda backed me up. and while I was eyeing the "female" fish, it sorta had a burst of some kind? it was all wavy like when u put in meds or salt in it, and some white things that looked like ich. and for a moment, I thought it might be a bloated up fat male having a "wet dream". The super tippoff that it wasn't right was this night, she/he kept staying on teh gravel, laying next to some high rocks so it wasnt balanced anymore either, and finally, the discoloration and maybe lost of scales where it stretched alot. It was also gasping like a catfish inside a evaporating mud puddle in Africa which was a little faster than it usually breathe on the gravel. So I moved it to a little container on the top right of my aquarium. So far, possible cause was oxygen loss which is also odd since it was well pumped with air and a fish bladder problem but it was working fine a few hours b4 ... So the next thing imma try b4 it dies, its giving it some salt. PLEASE teLL ME WAT'S WRONG?

SHORT VERSION:
I boughtta zeb danio.
It was bloated fat : asumably a female.
It was fine but then something happend.
1 might be the release of something with some white tiny balls also coming out (May be just fish pee?
blink.gif
)
Can't stay off the gravel of my tank.
Labored Breathing.
and cant stay balanced.

Gahh... this is going be my 4th fish this week :/
Are Guppies usually the 1st one to go from NTS? (New Tank Syndrome)
the new 1s I bought died. The one that was here in the 1st place obviously didnt.

If you have a solution, I'd prefer if you e-mail it to me but post ur things anywyas. it's *email removed at request of member* if you guys dont know it anf it didnt show on my accoiunt setting. Chances are that I'm not likely to come back to this site.

Gawwww nvm. It died when I was typing the stupid thing. At least someone tell me what friggin happend. :shout: :-(

Swim bladder or bacterial maybe...
Did you climatise it before adding it ?
Sorry it died.

1st, it's obviously not ich. how would ich lead to the poor thing's death? but thank you for the "sorry it died", I was doing everything I can to save it.

A funny thing tho.. when it died.. it had it's normal colors back like it was alive again but it may be just the stress not being there.
Have a good life in Fishy Heaven, big guy.
So, so far, noone have a cause for this mysterious death? I'd rather not disect it to see if it was a male bloated up or a female. Also, Is there by any chance that it was just doing a normal egglaying procedure like betas when they mate? cause i'd hate myself for fressing my fish alive.

oh yeah. wat did u mean by climatise the fish?
I know i usually get off the topic alot, but my tank is "cursed", maybe? I don't think it's natural for zebrAs to always chase there same species like it's trying to eat them. and I dont think its playing too. It would usually aim the fins. It also increased the tore a african chilid made on my guppy and its chasing neons like a shark. now, today, I've seen my neons which once was a happy school together actually turn AGAINST each other! it''s like if theres a chemical reaction in my tank nobody noes about and its affecting the part of the fishs' brain that sees other fish as friend of foe. it's almost like a big gladiator ring with the last man surviving except their tropical fish >_>, they cant do a crap on others cause of their tiny mouths. the only thing not participating is the guppy.

so whats THAT all about?

Before we worry about why your fish are gladiators...

How long has this tank been cycled? Or set up?

How many and what type of fish did you start off with?

What are your:

pH:
Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:

As you said " it''s like if theres a chemical reaction in my tank nobody noes about"

There might be some truth in that - what are you water stats at ?

well.. the tank has been running for over 7 years. once, there was a sudden algael bloom but we fixed that a long time ago. about the stats and cycle... we never drained the tank of water b4... the only way water was going down was evaporation. I know its a super-recommemded thing but it was such a hassle. the stats, I dunno. Im planning to get my water checked out AND get one of those inside kits. Do Jack's A&P supply them?

also, so when I bought the new fish, there were only 2 left in there after a long time on negligence. So I dunno. And I still don't know wats going on with the aggresivness

I think you're missing the point we're trying to make.... your fish's behavior and death is most likely due to your water parameters. We need the readings before we can really help you further.

Sounds like it was simply bad tank maintenance but it also sounds like you are working with limited information..... you help us, we'll help you. :good:

I have a theory on the aggressivness of the fishies. When I bought the fishes, I 4got about that i only had goldfish flakes, not tropical. And since I had a Betta b4, and that the Bettas were the closer to tropical flakes so I used those. Could that cause aggression?

I cant drive a car yet to Jacks and I dont have a in-home kit. ill try to get there ASAP

ok y'all! I finally got in the results.

Ammonia 1.0ppm
Nitrate 200ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Total Hardness 250ppm
Total Alkalinity Buffering Capacity 240ppm
pH 8.4ppm

So far, I have to do a 50% water change and add Bio-Boost
