Depends on your fish's personality, but, frequently yes. There are long pipettes that you can buy to avoid doing this. They have them on Drs. Foster and Smith. SH
 
It will depend a lot on how comfortable the fish is in your tank and this will be determined by other tankmates. If it feels safe and secure it will leave it's burrow to catch food like any other fish.
 
good point petey, they do require over about 3 inches of sand of varying size granules to burrow in for ideal conditions.
 
i was reading that they need 5-7 inches on drfostersmith (but i thought that was very generous)

then somewhere else i read they needed more then 3.
so exactly how many inches do they need ?
 
they deffinitely need 5-7 inches, I've seen them in less and they don't look nearly as happy
