I've got the chance to purchase a used 55 gallon with stand for $50. It doesn't come with a hood or canopy though, so I'd have to build one myself. (Shouldn't be too hard though.)
It's got an optional light strip that I can get for $100 - I'm waiting on more details, but I know that it takes 2x florescents and 2x metal halides. I was told that the current owner was using it for a salt-water set-up and that he never actually used the halides because they were so bright!
Does this sound like a decent set-up for a planted tank? I know that 55G aren't ideal as they are so narrow and I'm kinda bummed about how limited it'll be, but I think I could make it work.
