Lawd! So last night I was working w/ my live food cultures for my fries (bettas) . . . I have a good variety.

Grindal worms
BBS
Microworms
and Vinegar eels

I think any of the fishies that have babies will do good :) It's a buffet of worms.

But when I opened the microworms. . . (I got this culture fr ebay) the smell didn't hit me for a couple seconds but when it did, it was the worse smell I have ever dealt w/ in fish keeping. And seriously I've come across some nasty smelling tanks. . . cleaning etc.

But this one. . . it's like I tried to breathe through my mouth and STILL, my throat could smell it. It was the worse thing ever!! And you know how when you've smelled something bad it sticks w/ you for awhile - yeah I'm still gagging on the fumes.

What's the worse thing you've smelled dealing w/ fish keeping??

they can smell bad, especially when mixed with oatmeal.

The other day I kept smelling something disgusting in my living room, I eventually tracked it down to a filter that must have not restarted when my electricity went off a couple days before. It was nice and warm, just cooking the gross filter floss inside.

But the worst, worst, worst was a canister filter that I took off of a tank with a snail infestation. I left it out back for about two weeks before I decided to venture out to bust the top off. Blech, it was freakin' foul.

Back when I was new to brackish, someone at a local fish shop told me that I could put some salt water snails in for my puffer to eat. Well the snail retreated into his shell right away and closed that little trap door that they have, then he must have died. I didn't think much of it, just thought it was normal or what not. A few weeks later I realized that he hadn't really moved, (I thought that he'd probably been coming out at night.) Well I pulled him out of the tank and the little trap door fell off, and out slipped a very dead snail. the smell was so bad that I had to run to the restroom and vomit.

That just happened to me with my Golden Apple Snail. It was only dead for a few hours. I have read that because they are mainly composed of water they sort of dissolve into nothing when they die. Wrong, they really smell bad! It's body was out in the tank and it's shell had brown stuff in it (poo?). I am not getting another in case it dies while I am on holiday. It would really contaminate the tank.

Oh yeah, I never want to smell that again, now I just have a small fresh water tank set up solely for raising those annoying little snails that everyone hates. I just grab a few and throw them in and the puffer eats them right up.

Have you ever found a missing fish dead in your tank a while after it went missing? That is one of the worst things I have ever smelled

 Yeah, microworms can get a bit on the nose at times. I love opening the lids on my cultures whenever the missus' mother is around - makes for a very short visit!

I actually have two out in the shed which haven't been touched since we moved house (about 2-3 months) and I am dreading emptying them and cleaning the containers out.

tetra min in a small sealed container for a few weeks with a bit of water in there!!!!!!!!!

My worst smell ever with fish keeping? STRAIGHT AMMONIA from the bottle, fishless cycling. I can still smell it at times...... my eyes tear up and I can't breathe for a second or two

psssh, thats nothing compared to week old dead blackworms  i had a blackworm tank, they all died and the water turned brown. i didnt know they were dead until i walked by it. when i poured the worms down the toilet i puked (ended up swallowing it because i didnt want to open my mouth) had to turn the exhaust fan on and close the door for an hour before the smells started going away.

Frozen squid that I feed to my carnivorus fish, I left it out to thaw and forgot I had left it on the counter so I when I walked into my house about 6 hours later the kitchen smelled horrible and my cat threw up on the floor
