Wood In Tanks

So I've got an old stump from a juniper bush that I sawed in two. I've used a piece of cedar bush before and not had problems... Have any of you used a piece of juniper in a tank before? They have sweet roots and I plan to attach java ferns to it. It's currently sitting in a bucket of water and I still plan to boil it.

Thoughts? Looking for people who have either used it before and it worked, or well, the opposite.

I believe that, as long as it is a hard wood, (you can find out online) and it hasn't been treated with pesticides, fertilisers etc, and you don't clean it with some sort of chemical, that it should be fine. But you'lll want to wait for someone else to confirm that, cuz I'm not 100% sure.
