This morning when I woke up I found that my beautiful super long fin half-moon did some terrible things to his own tail. :(
I always leave a dim light on like a reflective moon light and he's never done this before but today I have no idea, but he just did it. I always re arrange and what-not and I know no matter how much pro you are at betta keeping this is beyond anyone's control. :( Now I need to start a healing trial.

Does anyone know why they do this? Is it that they catch sight of their tail in the corner of their eye and think it's another betta? He is still very lovely though, hopefully this was just a one off.

Stress of some kind, water condition going bad could be a cause. Is there a filter,a heater?. The tank decoration could be too simple and boring for a betta. I can only see one plant on the pictures you posted but I maybe wrong. There was someone else on here with a problem like that with a betta and it seemed the fish kept doing it once it started but I would imagine this is not a normal betta behaviour. I don't know if it's fair to compare, but dogs that are not getting the right conditions(like regular walks, mental stimulation, etc...) get obsessive with something, like chewing everything around, chasing tails, walking in circles, getting aggressive and disobedient. Maybe it's true for more intelligent fish like bettas.
