Hey everyone,
Thought I'd share this with you. I am getting some WC Apistogramma Cacatuoides tomorrow! Tolak is shipping 6 over here with a albino birstlenose (dwarf). Now here is the tank set up (please read carefully). I have a 10g tank being filtered and heated and receiving weekly, if not twice a week (if I deem it necessary) which both include gravel vacs to pick up particulate matter. I am aware that it is unwise to keep 6 in a 10 gallon, even with the MASSIVE amount of hiding places in the tank (I will post a pic). As soon as they pair off, or create a harem ect. I am going to offload the ones that are not able to be kept in the tank. We've already made sure that my pH is very similar to Tolak's, and he's been raising the kH on his tank to match mine. Anyway, I'm really pumped because I've never had wild caught cacatuoides before! Here is a picture to show you the massive amount of hiding places available:

Pictures will be up regarding the fish once they come in and feel at home!

Sad news. They came in today, but the brand new heat pack that Tolak shipped it with malfunctioned and the fish got EXTREMELY cold. There are only 5 cockatoo's instead of sick, and they all appeared to be dead. I saw a gill move so I put them in a bucket and slowly raised them to tank temp over the period of 30 mins and popped them in the tank. They are VERY stressed and look 100 percent better than they did when they came in, but I expect I might lose 1 or 2. The pleco's both are dead, to my knowledge. I couldn't get them to move but I put them in a net and into the tank to see if they by miracle, come back. The downside of living in the Midwest, the winter is not good to fish. I will have pictures up later.

So you got rid of you Convicts that you were breeding then? glad you gone for a more sensible option.

Tolak emailed a while ago saying that he knew someone who had some wild caught's and wanted to know if I wanted some. Obviously they were the better choice, so I picked them up. The two plecos are dead, but the apistogramma's have really perked up.

What did you do with your convicts? and did you manage to raise the marbled fry?

The convicts were sold off to another tank owner, who is keeping them in a 30g. Most of the fry did not make it and there are a few left in the tank, and they will be food for the new Apisto's.

The other male. He's harder to see because he's hiding in the dark!

The clean-up crew. Ramshorn snails.

So I just got back onto campus earlier today. My roomie has been more or less taking care of the fish since the 2nd of Jan. I came and looked into the tank to find a dead male. I was trying to figure out why he died when it hit me. I looked over and saw a very colorful female proudly parading her fry around a corner of the tank and a HUGE male guarding them. The other male got to close and they killed him. Now I have to rehome two Apisto's, but they have babies! I will get pictures up when they get closer to the front of the tank! I am very excited about this!

congats :good:

Thank you! They are almost at a size where I can take a good picture (My phone has an awesome camera, but lets not make it work harder than it needs to!)

I bought a second tank (10g, came with a filter), a cheap heater and 10 pounds of gravel, and a iron double tank stand to hold both 10 gallon tanks. I then let the filter pad sit in the cycled tank for 3 days in an effort to clone the bacteria from the original tank. I them set up the tank, with the cloned filter and some older gravel (bacteria's in that too) and then placed the breeding pair in there. Now I have a breeding pair in one tank (babies soon?) and the fry in another tank. I will have pictures up soon.

Cant wait !!!

I was wondering why I hadn't seen the fry since changing tanks. The heater I bought (used, but lit up and it's from a local place, I trust them), doesn't work correctly. The tank is at 65-70 degree's. I have no thermometer, but the rooms temp is set at 70 (it's dorm room heating though, so who knows). I moved the adults heater into their tank and plan on buying a brand new one from the walmart and trying to get a return on this one. Pics will be up of the parents later today and the fry as soon as they start swimming about.

Here are some pictures. The female is first:

She was bright yellow when I first saw her with the fry.

I don't think the male likes my phone very much!

I have a picture of one of the fry I am posting tomorrow. The parents are going to lay eggs again! Their breeding tubes are down and they have been dancing around an area where I believe they will lay the eggs! I am truly blessed to be this lucky!
