There was a test somewhere about DSB's in small tanks (aka small areas), cant find it though.

Agree on the DSB issue. You need DEEP sand (think 12-18") and significant surface area. One of the best mediums for a DSB is ironically the cheap 5gallon bucket... Nice and deep, decent surface area, works great. In a small space with high nitrates, consider a "coil" nitrate reactor. A google search will help on that one
