Why's It Happening?

I've asked this a couple times before, but not actually gotten an answer. My 10 gallon tank I *thought* was cycling.... I had quite a nitrIte spike, but my ammonia is still high... why?! What's going on??? Why won't the ammonia go down?

how are you cycling it?

and what are your nitrate readings?

there is fish in the 10 gallon. nitrate reading is between 10-20 on any given day. nitrites are zero, ammonia hangs around 1 or 1.5 ppm constantly.

Could you check your tap water and tell us what the readings are? I honestly can't come up with a reason, other than a filter media change, to disrupt the cycle, but the nitrate readings might be because of your tapwater. *shrugs*

i'm not near as worried about the nitrates as i am the ammonia.
