Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the sources I have been able to find suggest that if the species is extinct in the wild (still some debate) this is due to pollution of its natural habitat. This does not surprise me, as it is well known that China has huge environmental problems, with a lot of heavy industry, and a need for expanding agriculture to feed its population. It is a similar situation to that of the goodeids in Mexico.

In other words, this is not the fault of the aquarium hobby- to the contrary, this fish depends on aquarists to keep it alive at all! Its only hope is for numbers of experienced and responsible aquarists to keep it and breed it, keeping proper records, until the Chinese have got their act together and cleaned up their natural environment. At the moment it seems there is too much pollution for the species to be reintroduced into its natural habitat. Maybe it needs a special association, like the livebearers association, to look after its interests?

If my info is wrong, please correct me.

I agree with you totally, its a similar situation to "now extinct in the wild" animals that are only available in zoo's a special breeding programs. Gene pools end up being a problem and there are nightmares with Interbreeding etc.

At least a gene pool for the WCMM is going to be larger as so many are in "captivity"

well there not hard to breed according to what lot's of people say so we should be able to keep the species alive till china stops polluting itself.

:good:

i know what you mean but it has to stop eventually, London used to be the biggest city in the world and Britain was referred to as 'the factory of the world' making nearly everything (look i do pay attention in history :) lol) so look how things eventually change.

:good:

depends on people willing to keep them, how many we have in captivity for the gene pool and people breeding them. as long as people keep and breed them they should survive.

:good:

yeah. i like watching minnows in big shoals. showing great bright colours in biggish tanks.

have you seen the long finned one's they look quite good.

:good:

lol im a quite a noob really, but i had to cram revise for my first(and only not for long) tank which is 2 months ish old so i dont know that many breeds of fish, but i thought there was only one breed of clowd minnow *googles*

there the same species just in the species some have been bred for long fins, some for different colours etc. i've kept fish for around 12 years but my mum kept them for me when i was little. i've had so many different species of fish lol.

:good:
