I realize it is a crazy time, but I just happened to start my tank right before this mess. Figured since I was at home the whole time I would get some cherry shrimp. Everywhere I look online or local pet store all but maybe the crazy expensive shrimp are out of stock. Fish you can get everywhere but not shrimp. Just curious as to why anyone thinks this would be. I know they are breeding their own not like they are importing shrimp from another country. Why no shrimp available to purchase?

It could just be because of the Coronavirus. Once you get a male and a female, it is very easy to breed shrimp. Have you tired looking on eBay.com?

I have personally kept cherry shrimp for over a year now and I would consider $3 per shrimp is a good deal.

No I have not looked on ebay I was just checking the online retailers LiveAquaria, TheShrimpTank etc. I was more just curious as I could not see how Covid could affect shrimp breeding but not tropical fish. By crazy expensive I meant the unusual shrimp varieties that were going for 10 a shrimp for example.
Thanks much

$10 a shrimp? That’s crazy. COVID-19 could be effecting the shrimp trade because the government has shut it down, deeming it a non essential business.

Red cherry shrimp have become very popular and it’s hard to keep them in stock. This has been occurring even before the virus began. Just supply and demand. That’s why my lfs was so thrilled when I gave her over 100. :)

No I placed a order at live aquaria the day before this started to blow up and pretty much all were in stock. I got the delay notice and went to check and all were out of stock. I would think the online retailers would put a notice if they were shut down due to restrictions but they are taking orders for fish.

I personally have over 70 in my 29g tank. (I just counted up to 20 babies hiding in my java fern. ;))

Hmm..interesting. I would look on eBay if I were you.

I really was just curious more than anything. I will wait till life goes back to normal

My lfs told me when I took her mine that there aren’t enough breeders to supply her.

I was chatting to one of the guys at Proshrimp (big UK shrimp supplier) last summer and asked him why everything was out of stock. He said it wasn't but they were short staffed (due to holidays) so they just marked them out of stock because its not as simple as catching them, putting them in a bag and posting them. They do use specialist couriers, and everything is shipped to a previously agreed date and time.
They currently have this announcement on their site - and every species is shown as out of stock
We are currently experiencing high demand and an unusual amount of orders. We would like to advise the following points:
- Please allow additional time for any customer service requests. We are unable to take calls at this time, please open a ticket via our support system or email: [email protected]
- Our same day dispatch cut off time has been changed to 12.00 NOON
- Live shrimp and snail shipping has been temporarily suspended. Royal Mail is experiencing delays across its network
- All carriers are working as expected at this time. We are starting to see a few delays on our Royal Mail services (especially economy options), please allow a couple of extra days for delivery on those.
Since everything is so disrupted atm that seems like a sensible approach. No doubt the small individual sellers on eBay are still shipping but it makes sense that the bigger, reputable companies will stop. A 3 or 4 hour delay in transit could easily mean a bag of dead shrimp.
