I have been trying to fishless cycle my tank for a wee while now. At the beginning, I calculated what I thought I would need to get my 58 litre tank up to 6ppm. I overestimated and it went off the scale. So I thought I would just wait a bit longer (I was trying to use the add and wait method).

But a month later I am still waiting and my ammonia is off the scale!! I added 30ml of 9% ammonia :*)
Whoops.

The tank is cycling, I have ammonia off the scale, nitrite 0.5ppm, nitrate, 5ppm. Am I going to have to wait several more months?? Should I try a water change to speed it up or just accept I shall have to wait longer for thinking myself smart with such calculations?? (oh the fall comes....) :p

Do some water changes to get your ammonia down, keep testing and keep waiting. If you've got your nitrates then your tank is 'cycled' (I think), and it should mean you have your beneficial bacteria developing nicely in your filter.

But yeah, you should be able to bring the ammonia down by doing water changes.
