Who Should Live In My 30 Gal?

I am about to vacate a 30 gallon tank, and am letting my girlfriend take over... kinda She wants to have a peaceful community tank with a couple different schooling fish, and a variety of other creatures like shrimp and snails. I would personally like to have it be somewhat planted, include some gourami and or german rams/s (if possible), and possibly some type of loach. Anyways, I'm kinda new to friendly fish, and it would be really helpful if someone could paint me a clear picture of how to best fit BOTH of our desires.

Gouramis I heard like shrimp for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I think German Rams like to eat shrimp.

Well, she does have a betta. Maybe she could put a shrimp with her betta? I know M bettas are aggressive... but would it attack a shrimp?

I heard that sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Its worth the gamble with the shrimp and betta shrimp are hardly difficult to replace either way.

It's a 24x12x15 (inches) ...or something close to that. The betta fish is in his own little 5gal.

khuli loaches are awesome. rasboras or blacks skirt tetras are a good schooling fish. blue gouramis look nice too.

Here is a list of good fish:
neon tetras....any tetra will work
platy
gourami, though it may eat shrimp Mine as far as I know has not attempted to eat my amano shrimp
algae eaters: ottos are very good, siamese algae eaters, I would not try chinese algae eaters because they can become territorial and attack other fish
