Hi all:

Does anyone have a resource for discontinued 24", dual fluorescent, strip light hood (oak color) meant to work with the glass versatops? Apparently All Glass discontinued these hoods (very disappointing!!) and I need new ballasts and bulbs. I thought a new one would be cheaper than repairs. Plus, when I unscrewed the screw holding the white reflector assembly to the oak chassis, the darn plastic parts that the screw threads into broke off! Grrr... I could fix it, I suppose, with some machine screws drilled through the top of the hood, with some nuts, but it won't look as nice. Plus, I still need the new bulbs and ballasts. I've googled the topic, but no luck. Thought perhaps someone might have run into this problem before. I don't know what All Glass expects folks to do. They only make the dual strip lights starting at 30" now.

Can you take a picture of your ballast? I am assuming it is a T8 we are talking about. In theory all you need is a ballast that runs the proper wattage T8 bulbs. It doesn't have to be from All Glass. The only issue is the dimensions of the existing ballast and finding a new one that will fit. I've retrofitted and modified a few single T8 fixtures of theirs. While as you said it may not be very cost effective to put in the time to fix yours it is still an option.

I would either replace it or retrofit the broken hood to run a different bulb type. The issue with retrofiting it is you will have some screw heads visible on the top of the unit. This has never really bothered me since they are not that noticeable on my fixtures. But if you care about the small details more then the cost then just get a different hood. Your fixture put out 30 watts I believe. You could get a T5 fixture with a single 14 watt tube and be at similar light levels depending how deep the tank is. The fixture will be much more narrow though then your existing one. If it was me I would just retrofit it with a single T5 tube. Could be done for under $30 using whats available at home depot.
