My lfs are not in any way 'local' and the weed they supply is terrible. In fact. I have never seen any Java moss at any of them so i am looking for somewhere online that does a good deal on it.

It must be in the UK as well :)

The majority of java moss I have came from Maidenhead Aquatics and it's good quality. eBay is another good source for java moss too:

Thanks for the reply elisew. I don't have a paypal account to use ebay but i will google maidenhead aquatics and see if they can deliver to me up here in Yorkshire :)

[edit] Just checked out their site and i can't find any mention of java moss. They have a store up here though so i might check them out anyway.

Mate try searching for christmas moss.

It's described as an "exciting alternative to java fern"..

I like it, keep it in my tank attached to bogwood.

Sheffield :good:

Ive quickly Googled "aquarium shops in Sheffield", and there are 7 options listed in the Google Maps section. I didn't bother to look further down the page. I'd be surprised if none of them were able to sell you Java Moss, but I would say that all qualified as 'local'.

HTH :good:

I do not drive so rely on public transport and Sheffield is a massive place. The closest lfs (well there are two about the same distance), to me would probably take an hour to get to and their range of weed is pretty grim. Their fish are fine. It's just the weed they struggle with. I do have a PAH just a little further away so i might go over and see what they have in the way of weed.

I see what you mean. I will have to keep my eye open for some of that as well. There are some really nice looking bonsai tree effect tanks using it

There are quite a large number of easy care mosses that you could use. You could also use guppy grass as an alternative. If you are using public transport to reach the LFS, by all means call first. I would hate to spend an hour on a bus just to find out that the place I was going had nothing for me.

did you manage to source any java moss? I have some spare...

I have yes thank you. It was a bit of scabby stuff from the back of one of the tanks in my lfs (about an hour away from me), so i've left it doing it's own thing in the tank for the minute. I'll see if i can bring it round over the next few weeks :)

If you have a decent sized sample, it will grow and prosper under relatively low light. High light, at least in my tanks, tends to cause algae to grow on the moss. Since the moss is a fairly tight clump, the algae growth can become a real maintenance problem in caring for the moss.

If i squeeze it all up in to a pretty tight ball it will be about the size of a baseball. As it is i have opened it out as much as i can without bits floating off and just have it sitting along the front of my tank until i decide exactly what to do with it (going looking for a center peice driftwood this week i think). The neons are loving it. They're using it as a playground half the time.

The way that clump is sitting right now, unattached to anything and sort of spread out, will give you the best result in terms of growth. If you don't mind a bit of an unruly look, you have the perfect arrangement for the moss right now. Just don't provide it with enough light to readily grow algae.
