I achieved zero ammonia at 2 weeks with my first tank.
This tank is much better planted and I used some established filter media from Tank No.1.

mg/l and ppm are two units which are so close they can be considered the same. They are not quite the same but the difference is so tiny we can ignore it.

or same as

milligram per liter or 1ppm (1-2ppm)

my guess is americans scientists say ppm because they dont like to talk litres, even though US use metric like the rest of us do for professional purposes

1 million mg of water make 1kg water which is 1 litre

You're correct in that I'm not done cycling, though some would say that as I'd used old filter media and planted a significant amount of plants, my tank should be effectively 'cycled' and I could put fish in straight away.

I don't think so.
