If you only have fish, have the light on when you are there to watch your fish. The 8 hiour period is plenty for most situations for a planted tank but can cause algae problems if there is no plant to compete for the nutrients in the water.

I only have fish in my community aquarium in my living room but I leave my lights on about 9 hrs a day . But I tend to watch my fish more than the TV or my computer so I want my lights on so I can view them better . It does cause an algae problem , but I have to take the good with the bad , so it adds a little extra work when I do my weekly partial water changes and maintenance but it's worth it to get to enjoy the calming effect and peaceful feeling that comes over me in watching my fish all day long .
