What would think the best PH level should be?

It really depends on which fish you keep. 7.6 is the same as ours (sig shows what fish I keep) but my African cichlids should really have a ph of about 8.0 so Have added lots of shells to the gravel.
 
The best thing is to keep the ph steady. Your fish will acclimatize to any ph as long as it's steady and doesn't keep changing.
 
Just to prove that point :p, I have a pH of 8.0 and keep all sorts of fish that like acid water. It realy is just the stability. I once tried lowering it and lost 3 fish in the process - and I did it very gradualy too.
