I was just thinking the other day, what happens if there is a power failure in your area and your filter cant run? how long till the bacteria starts dying off? or worse, till fish die off?

Is there anything you can do to help it?

I had a 30 gal tank set up with 2 Gold Gouramis, 4 Black skirt tetras and an Emerald Cory whenever hurricane Katrina hit. I went back about 2 or 3 weeks to check on my stuff (no flooding luckily) and EVERY single fish was still alive, no filter or heater running. The water was crystal clear as well. If you think about it if they're not being fed at all then they wont produce any waste, therefore the water quality should stay fairly decent for a while. I heard fish can go a long time without food too.

In other words, if its just a short temporary loss of power ( a day or two maybe) I don't think theres anything to worry about. When the power does come back just to be safe you could feed them maybe once a day every other day, for a week or so.

I have a handy little gadget that i use for camping and running the air pump when travelling any distance to buy fish. it converts 12 volt battery into 240 ?. handy as a back up. it cost about £50, but well worth it.

I had a powercut in Cornwall that lasted 2 days. Most Freshwater fishes will be fine for wellover a week there would be plenty of nutrition in a maturefish tank for the bacteria to last months (Im a microbiologist so I know this to be true). I did have several battery operated airpumps which I used to oxygenate and cirulate the water though they were about £10 10 years ago I have no idea how much they will be now though as I am just restarting my hobby
