i know plants are generally out of the question with a large cichlid tank but is there anything at all that would work?

moss? potted plants?

the tank is a 55 gallon with 1 jack dempsey.

JD's arent to my knowledge, particularly bad with plants but can uproot them, so go for things like java fern, anubias etc that can be anchored to wood and rocks and you should be ok.

With green terrors, I got away with Anubias spp., Thai onion and Vallis spp. The Vallis needed to be fixed down using a yoghurt pot top, but still got shredded a bit.

thank you people. does anyone know if a moss wall would work?

Moss was shredded by my terrors.

You say you have a Jack Dempsey, IME i've never had issues with Jacks and plants. I have one female who likes to tear around the tank with the odd crypt from time to time, but generally my Jacks have always been fine with plants.

Can't say for other Cichlids, as Jacks are my only experience so far, except Oscars (but mine HATE plants)
