I have to admit that II have not been paying as close attention as I should be the past number of days with my tetras. Parameters are all fine and tank cleaned and siphoned Tuesday with 70% water change. I’ve just been busy with the new fry. So I

found this poor baby today. What guesses do I have on what it is? @Colin_T??! Don’t know if it was Popeye that I missed, injury, tumor.

Oh no poor guy.
Thats pretty severe popeye, did he have a growth on his face before this?

How are your other fish acting?
Did you have any hand sanitizer on your hands at all (see the hand sanitizer thread, severe popeye is something mine ended up with due to chemical contamination)

He was healthy as a shark! I’m so upset with myself because I usually sit in front of that tank for a good 20 minutes in the morning. Love watching them all. Popeye is so easy to treat in its early stages too. He’s hanging in there but he may have too much damage. I swabbed the eye with methylene blue and put him in a QT tank with Kanaplex, Furan 2 and a bit of Fungus Cure. I figured at this point what do we have to lose? I found him hiding behind a driftwood tree. I thought he had another fish in his mouth. I know he wasn’t bad on Tuesday because I sat in front of the tank why it refilled. Nothing caught my eye then. It has to hurt. Poor baby. When I first saw it I thought of Columnaris but it is localized on his eye. Color s good and still swimming. Seems to want to eat but can’t seem to see the flakes come down by him. Will see how he looks in A.M. :(

He may have scratched it on something or maybe another tetra nipped him in the eye and it became infected.
I dont think this is your fault or fault of not watching as much at all, tbh, I think its just one of those unfortunate things.

That’s a pretty extreme infection. I don’t know for sure, you may be right, I’m just throwing out that it may not be that.

Early last week my tank went into a mini cycle. I thought perhaps due to all of the spawning and eggs being laid causing ammonia to rise. My nitrites went up one day and I quickly did a huge water change. Parameters were back to normal the next day. I think the rise in nitrites kicked off the infection and Popeye. Watching everyone else closely but seem to be fine.

It's a really badly inflamed eye. It could be from an injury or infection but it's extremely large and must be causing some pain.
