Hi all, I bought two fish from my local LFS. Unfortunately I forgot to ask what exactly they were in my excitement.

All I know is that they are Dwarf Chiclid's.

Fish 2)

Thank you :D

From the pics I would say Apisto. Trifasciata.

Someone who knows more might give you a definate answer though :)

Skittles

Looks to me like a young Apistogramma viejita or Apistogramma macmasteri.
BTW its Cichlid not Chiclid

I just googled that name, they do show similar markings. How long do they take to colour up like that?

Have I got a male and female? How can I sex them?

Thanks

I agree with this.

I heard the Viejita strain was becoming quite rare actually.
I also read that scientists reckon that the strain came from a crossbreeding of Agassizi and cacatouides.

They should take around less than a year to reach full colour, even sooner if fed high protein foods, like Bloodworms or colour flakes.
ATM its very hard to sex your Apisto as its still quite young so you have to wait until its bigger where, the male will have a longer dorsal fine. Anal fin of males are elongated and pointy while females anal fin are usually rounded. Mature females (with full colour) should have a pale yellowish belly.

Top one looks to be female. But the blue tints around the face are throwing me off.

Fish 2 is unsexable atm.

I`d say viejita because I have a female viejita myself ;)

Well then. I have just seen my bigger fish out of the two looking very fragile :-(.

The tail fin is completely shredded. I have tried to make a few more caves out of slate for him to try hide in.

Do i have 2 males? Should i get a female? What ratio is best? How can i prevent the fighting?

Thanks all

If you can get more pics i'll take another look if you'd like, as the ones you have are too blurry for me to see properly

Hi, ive just looked at your pictures and the fish look like Apistogramma borelli to me..

Apistogramma veijita is not becoming rare Its always been rare and almost impossible to find. All fish in the shops labelled Veijita are domestic forms of A.macmasteri.

As for the crossbreeding of Agassizi and cacatuoides  Ive never heard so much rubbish in my life. Where did you find that? it go's to show that you should not believe all you read on the net. Please dont spread that rumor around as it is 110% not true!!!

I think from the pics you have two females.. They will scrap over potential breeding territory.

I believe it is cabomba.

My little fishy was found dead yesterday :-(

They were fighting with each other.

I will get a pic of the fish once it colours and grows a bit more.
