Hi all

My 40g reef is doing nicely and my corals are growing and spreading:) At present i have various Zoas, Star Polyps, Mushrooms, and a nice Sacrophyton.

I would like to add something different, preferably for a higher flow area. Can anyone recommend something for the newer reef?

Cheers

as ben said, lighting is crucial, but if its suitable for a hammer. i would also consider a sun coral (turbostrea...sp?) they require little light and lots of flow. they will need bi daily target feeding too.

Frogspawn coral is really nice and as far as i know does very well in a moderate to strong flow, it does not require massive amounts of light either. I have some in my tank and i love it, you will be pleased if you buy some, i know i am, it looks even better under a blue light.

Oh yeh lighting lol

4 x T5's (2 x 36w White) (36w Blue) (36w coral star. Its sort of lilac colour?)

frogspawn does better when not in a strong flow. And although it doesn't require very strong light it is one of the more light hungry of the euphilia family.

I have mine at the top of my tank lit by t8's and leds and its doing great. ( Big thanks to Crazy Fishes for the sterling quality of original frag. )

Thanks for that :good: I can see an empty area where the flow is slower but still good lighting so i will have a look at a frogspawn.

The area i would like to put something is in quite a strong flow and has very good lighting?

Thanks

Don't forget to leave a good 3-4" between the Euph and other corals however, they do have powerful and long (relatively) stinging tenticles...

Whilst you are talking of distances between Euphyllia and other corals rabbut, can 2 different Euphyllias be placed right next to each other or do you need to leave a gap??

If they are the same species they will be fine with each other (Frogspawn touching Frogspawn for example). I think different species of Euphs will sting each other and require a gap, but you will want Skifletch or someone else to confirm that :good:

We have discussed this issue of different euphyllia species next to each other. We came to the conclusion that there is no definitive answer, some say they have had no end of problems and others, including myself have had excellent success (frogspawn and hammer) with Euphyllia corals intermingling tentacles. I think the best advice is if you want to be sure that you have no problems leave a good few inches between the different species and you have no potential for aggression. However there is no reason not to give it a go and see if they develop sweeper tentacles.

Mutant, glad you like the frag and that things are going well. Any updates in the journal yet??

With regards suggestions for corals that like moderate lighting and high flow....... have you thought about pulsing/pompom xenia and it will blend beautifully with your established corals. Sun coral is another good suggestion that I think truck made but the feeding doesn't have to be that intense. I feed mine every 2-3 nights heavily and that seems to be fine. With sun corals it is ESSENTIAL that you feed them as they are NON-PHOTOSYNTHETIC hence don't use light and rely on you feeding them. Blastomussa is an really nice looking coral which likes moderate lighting but I think moderate current as well. Big C may be able to help with this as he has serval in his reef but I think they may be good at adapting to higher flow rates.
Also depending on how far the coral will be from the lighting you may get away with a small frag of Montipora capricornus (an SPS), normally found in lagoons and can tolerate very variable conditions. Also providing flow is not too strong how about a Elegance coral (Catalaphyllia Jardinei); an LPS again found in lagoons but very nice and requires pretty much the same as Euphyllia.

Hope this helps

Regards

Would agree with this - I have a hammer and frogspawn touching each other and they are fine :good:
