I recently moved a Betta from an unheated 1 gal tank to a nice, heated and filtered 5gal.

...What should I do with the 1 gal? I know I can't put any fish in there, but what about snails and shrimp and frogs, etcetra? =D As long as there's something living in there I don't mind. =)

A few pond snails might survive in there. An apple snail typically uses 2 gallons of tank per adult snail. I don't know anything about frogs. You might get away with some of the small shrimps. Another good use for something that small is to raise live food like daphnia for the fish in the real tank.

snail with water changes every other/every third day... apple snails are cool!

I have a 1gal desktop correction, had.

Consisted of a super tiny air forced pump that got its juice off a USB.

silica sand substrate
amazon swords and a bit of the ole moss due to low light.
and a handful of shrimp (amano, cherry, ghost, your call), which breed, and get shipped off to the bigger tanks.

I just love setting up little tanks like that, the plants help filter out nitrate and provide a sound environment for a few shrimp, and if you make it nice it will look pretty snazzy!

Best of luck and keep us apprised.

Where can you get a 1 gallon tank? Do they have filter's or do you just do water changes?

Its more or less an approximation, i have never myself seen a rimmed standard "1 gallon" aquarium, but there's tons of fancy one gallon kids aquariums and this and that, a lot of cheap marketing to get people to imprison their betas at home, instead of tiny little buckets stacked 10 deep in a LFS.

Sorry if i seem harsh, i just dont like the way stores keep betas, sell betas, and "educate" their customers on "proper beta keeping"

"Oh yeah! a beta will be happy in a thimble!" grrrr :grr:

Sorry that's just my 2 cents.

A shrimp or two munching away is one thing.
