Hey guys. I'm set on doing my bigger tank for african cichlids, though I'm still trying to figure out what kinds I'm gonna go for. I was originally gonna try for malawi cichlids, but for some reason, every single african cichlid I like draws me back to lake tanganyika. Tropheus, julidochromis, altolamprogolus, limnochromis, shell dwellers.. I think I've been looking at the wrong lake when wanting to set up an mbuna tank.

While I like the looks of all the fish, I'm mostly looking at fish that will do a lot of digging rather than just swimming around and fighting with each other. I've noticed whenever I go to my LFS the julidochromis they have are always picking up the big pieces of gravel and shooting them at the walls for no apparent reason. But I love watching it.

I know that the julis are rather small though, so I don't know if I can mix them with anything other than shell dwellers and small synodontis without them getting eaten granted their small size and narrow body shape. So I'm worried about what exactly I can stock if I did choose to get julis.

Any ideas, or stocking suggestions for a tanganyikan tank with julis? Or without julis? Still exploring. It may be a while before I get fish as well, still need rocks and such. Also, should I go for big overfiltration with tanganyika? I was gonna get a fluval fX5 to filter the tank for mbuna, but this seems like it might be way strong if you don't overfilter tanganyikan tanks the same way. Dimensions are 48" long, 18" wide, 21" tall.

thanks much.

If you are looking for a sand shifting machine to go with some Julies look no farther than Multis, always busy and mine get along fine with my pair of Julies(regani)the Regani are one of the bigger Julies and are quite able to look after themselves, mine are in with 3 trets and a tropheous(duboisi),and a small white calvus

Sorry for my lack of knowledge in this area still, but what are "trets"?

And by multis you mean the tiny shell dwellers, correct? I'm thinking I might just use the 50 gallon for this, as all the fish will be much smaller then the ones I've got in my 75 assuming I'm set on julis.

With the 50, how many julis and multis could I get? (dimensions are 48" long, 12" wide, 18" tall) would I need to overfilter the hell out of it or could I suffice with say, a fluval 406 (rated for 100 gallon tanks) or an aquaclear 110 (rated for 110 gallon tanks) rather than a fluval FX5 (rated for 400 gals)

"Trets" are Neolamprologus tretocephalus,or 5 bar cichlids, lots of people say they are very aggressive but my three have settled in and are very little problem and are a striking fish, the" Multis" are Lamprologus Multifasciatus and in my opinion the best of the shellies ,if you have your heart set on Julies and they are easy to keep if you cant get a pair m/f you might need to start off with say 6 and when they pair off ,keep one pair m/f and return the rest to your LFS,have a look at some Calvus,Lamprologus Calvus they come commonly in black or white very peaceful fish,in the tank you mention 48" long I would go for Multis 2 males 4 females( provide them with plenty of shells) a pair of Julies, probably 1 Calvus and then some Cyps "Cyprichromis Leptosoma ,these fish are an open water shoaling fish so you should keep a minimum of 6,I run my 200 ltr tang tank on a fluval 405 with no problems, but I dont think you can over filter a tang set up

Is there something wrong with having more than a pair of julies? I've been told by a few people it'd be okay to keep a group of them rather than a pair.

I also like those neolamprologus, they're gorgeous. How big do they get? would they be compatible with the multis and julis?

Julies like most tangs are intolerant of other m/f of their species once a pair forms, the Trets or five bar cichlids grow to around 5"and mine get along fine with all the other fish in my set up ,though they can get a bit aggressive with each other, but nothing too serious the dominant fish, unsure of sex keeps the other two in line by the odd bit of chasing and flaring ,but its a wimp when it comes up against the Multis guarding their fry,get the balance right fishwise and you wont regret going down the tang route

Didn't think they'd hate each other that much if a pair forms, usually with central/south american social fishes like angels, convicts, discus, rams, etc still tolerate each other after pairing happens, but I'll keep note.

Are the three trets you have just random genders? Or would I need a ratio for them? What do you know about limnochromis auritus?

With the Julies you could try getting 5/6 and as they grow on try keeping one male with two or three females as long as they have plenty of rockwork it might just work, havnt a clue what sex my trets are the dominant tret is about 2"+ with the other two slightly smaller, they dont tend to hang about together you could try keeping a lone specimin ,they do fine on their own, never seen any L.Auritus in the UK from what I can gather they are mud dwellers and a bit of a specialist fish if you go for some would love to know how you get on with them

Where do you get your tangs webbie (If you dont mind me asking). I usually keep mbuna but been looking on mikes rifts and some of the tangs he has are amazing. Im really thinking about getting a set-up sorted for some.

Most of my tangs I buy from Prestwood PetZone near Kinver ,is it near you? ,well worth a visit, one of the guys who works there also keeps and breeds a few tangs ,bought a nice pair of Julies off him, quality fish ,only started keeping tangs about 4 months ago but I love em well worth the effort
